The Australian Working Holiday Maker (WHM) program offers a unique opportunity for young adults from eligible countries to experience life in Australia. For up to 12 months, participants can travel, undertake short-term work, and study, funding their adventures while immersing themselves in a new culture. This reciprocal visa scheme fosters cultural exchange and supplies vital labour to various sectors across the country.
There are currently over 40 partner countries participating in the WHM program, which is offered under two visa subclasses:
Both visa types allow for work and study, with the possibility of extensions if specific work requirements are fulfilled, especially in regional areas or roles related to disaster recovery. The Australian government’s continued investment in this visa program highlights its importance for labour mobility and international relations, particularly as other nations tighten their migration pathways.
The WHM program is subject to periodic updates based on demand and bilateral negotiations.
New Visa Ballot for High-Demand Countries
A pre-application ballot system now manages the high demand for the Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa from applicants in China, India, and Vietnam. This creates a more transparent and fair selection process.
To be eligible, applicants must:
India Joins the WHM Program
India is the latest country to join the Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa arrangement. Up to 1,000 young Indian nationals can now apply annually through the ballot system.
Expanded Natural Disaster Work Areas
The list of eligible postcodes for natural disaster recovery work has been expanded. This allows more WHM visa holders to meet the ‘specified work’ criteria needed to apply for a second or third visa. This includes bushfire recovery work and flood recovery efforts.
Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) Reforms
The Australia-UK FTA introduced significant new arrangements:
While both visas share the main purpose of a cultural holiday supplemented by work, they have distinct requirements.
This visa subclass 417 is typically for passport holders from countries like Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Republic of South Korea, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
This visa is for applicants from countries such as Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Israel, Malaysia, Thailand, the USA, and Vietnam. It shares similar features with the 417 visa but has additional requirements.
To enter Australia on a Working Holiday Maker visa, you must meet several core criteria.
If you are unsure about your eligibility, the team at Australian Migration Lawyers can provide tailored advice for your situation.
The application process differs slightly depending on the visa subclass.
For the Subclass 417 Visa:
For the Subclass 462 Visa:
You must be outside Australia when you apply for your first Working Holiday Maker (WHM) visa.
The visa application fee is currently $670 AUD. For those in the subclass 462 ballot, a non-refundable $25 AUD registration fee also applies.
Processing times vary. For the subclass 417 visa, many applications are processed in less than a day, though some can take up to two months. The subclass 462 visa process can take longer due to caps and high demand. It is always wise not to book any travel until you have received written confirmation of your visa grant.
